Sirius's attempts to joke are something that James is used to and it does make him smile a little, but he can hear the hurt in his best friend's voice and he knows it's something of a cover up. It's Kieren who startles a laugh out of him, quick and surprised.
"Sirius?" he asks, laughing. James doesn't know that Sirius ever seriously courted anyone. That had been James's domain, constantly fiddling with his hair and buying crappy flowers and trying not to sound like a complete toss when he opened his mouth. Eventually it had worked, somehow, but Sirius is right in saying that there was more of Lily hitting him than anything else for a long time. Sirius though, he had that way of smiling at a girl that made her want to stick her tongue down his throat without even really trying. The effortless Black charm combined with the allure of being the rebel of his family. Practically irresistible. It used to make James want to puke.
"Sirius didn't need to court," James says, shaking his head. There is, of course, one notable exception to that rule, but it's mostly speculation on James's part. Whatever had been between them, he doesn't think anything ever happened between Sirius and Remus, though he's not sure that's for lack of trying on Sirius's part. Maybe things would have been different without the war, but a lot of things would have been. "His version of flirting is about as subtle as a brick to the face."
